More than 75 teachers, school leaders and ministry of education officials convened at Hwa Chong Institution in Singapore recently to participate in a seminar/workshop on "Educating for 21st Century Global Capacities: What does it mean, and what does it look like in practice?" Suzanne Choo (PhD '12) and CPET's Deb Sawch (Ed.D. '13) presented an overview of the global education landscape and, especially, the transformational change taking place as schools reimagine teaching and learning that anticipate and respond to our complex, interconnected, globalized world. They described the four phases of their 4-year research study with CPET colleague Alison Villanueva (PhD '13) on Educating for 21st Century global capacities which took place in Toronto, Helsinki, Shanghai, Singapore, Perth/Australia, and New York from 2010-2014. They also shared their Global Capacities Framework--a tool they created as a lens through which to gather and analyze data which 26 schools in 3 countries have adapted to inform curriculum, instruction and assessments.
Choo and Sawch also presented the preliminary highlights of a comparative study, led by the National Institute of Education/Singapore in collaboration with Teachers College, on how two school districts--one in Connecticut and one in Singapore--have adapted a global capacities framework to kick-start aligned, vision-driven efforts to transform teaching and learning so that it deepens levels of critical, creative and global/ethical thinking essential for full participation in the world. |
