Become a reflective practitioner
Teacher retention and satisfaction continue to be a topic of discussion and research across the field as educators reflect on the unique challenges they face in the many roles and responsibilities that their job requires. “School districts across the country are increasingly fearful of losing newly hired, highly talented teachers. In the United States, 8 percent of teachers leave the profession annually, and more than 50 percent quit teaching before reaching retirement,” according to the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Even those who studied, with a plan to teach, often never enter the classroom, citing a “lack of respect” and describing teaching as a “very disempowered line of work,” says Liz Riggs.

Engage in a community of practice
Through dialogue and reflection on critical incidents, teachers are able to identify crucial moments and formative experiences that have helped shape their identity as educators. Critical reflection is not only an essential component of growth, but an effective way to cultivate self-respect and empowerment in your field. Throughout Teacher As Researcher, we'll build a reflective, non-evaluative community of practice together as we approach critical incidents with curiosity and support emerging teacher leaders as they self-select areas of exploration.

Connect practice and pedagogy
By engaging in critical reflection and a professional inquiry process, you will be able to strengthen the connection between your practice and pedagogy. As you deepen your understanding of crucial moments in your teaching career, we'll utilize the writing process as a vehicle for transforming critical reflection into powerful pieces of writing that can support you in (re)discovering what brought you to teaching and look forward with anticipation and excitement.

Ensure all students are heard
Teachers in all content areas are being asked to increase student participation in classroom discussions as a way for students to demonstrate and engage with their learning. But traditional approaches to discussion may not create the level of authentic engagement that shifting classrooms require, and many teachers feel limited by a lack of support addressing how to revise their instruction to meet current expectations.

Expand questioning & discussion
Designing rich classroom experiences that increase student-to-student interactions is essential for drawing out all voices in your classroom, and for meeting the expectations of teacher evaluation frameworks (including Domain 3b of the Danielson Framework and Hallmark 4 of NYSED's Hallmarks for Advanced Literacies). In Keep the Kids Talking, we'll unpack elevated questioning and discussion practices that promote engagement in pairs and small groups, and help you experiment with facilitating and fostering conversations in whole group environments. As you incorporate targeted strategies into your instruction, you'll create meaningful opportunities for students to be curious contributors in your classroom.

Navigating the complexities of co-teaching
It is often said that two heads are better than one, and this sentiment certainly applies when considering the work of planning for, instructing, and nurturing students. However, in the complex work of co-teaching, this is easier said than done. Those who enter a co-teaching relationship often feel unsure about the purpose or benefit of the partnership, and struggle to make the best use of combined professional knowledge.

Balancing your partnership
Co-teaching can take many different forms — even in the same classroom — and requires a unique level of preparation in order to ensure success. Co-teachers should be prepared to negotiate distinct teaching styles and philosophies, and find ways to leverage the strengths and skills of each teacher in service of high-quality instruction.

Adapting established co-teaching models
This course will explore the purpose and principles behind co-teaching, guiding you toward a more positive, productive relationship with your co-teacher. As we examine established co-teaching models that have been tested, tweaked, and turnkeyed, we'll also imagine how you might adapt these models for use in your own classroom in ways that honor your teaching partnership and creates structures for student success.

Define culturally relevant environments
It can be both exciting and overwhelming to take on the task of addressing long held patterns or beliefs and inspire instructional staff toward equity in the classroom. Culturally responsive and sustaining education frameworks — such as the NYSED CRSE Framework — have been developed to support teachers and leaders as they explore the important and urgent work necessary to create welcoming and inclusive student-centered learning environments.

Decode essential CRSE principles
While frameworks like these focus on what needs to be done, teachers and leaders often struggle with how to structure and implement the work in their school communities and in everyday classroom instruction.
  • How can you develop students’ abilities to connect across lines of difference?
  • How can a department effectively elevate historically marginalized voices?
  • How do we handle obstacles we encounter when centering students in our classrooms and communities?
Leaders for CRSE will address these questions while breaking down the principles of culturally responsive and sustaining education through the lens of the NYSED framework, providing clarity on what the principles mean, why they are important, and how they look in practice.

Devise a path for implementation
Throughout this course, we will consider how the CRSE framework can be used to strengthen instruction, and codify implementation plans. We'll also explore connections to other frameworks, including Danielson and CASEL, opening up the possibilities for a holistic understanding of how these structures overlap and support one another, and how thoughtful implementation can lead to positive outcomes for all students.
