Reimagine writing

The Student Press Initiative (SPI) reframes writing as an all-inclusive learning experience that taps into a real-world audience, reshaping curriculum and engagement in the classroom.

Sponsor a school-embedded project
Launch a Student Press Initiative project, empowering students and educators with instructional support, authentic writing, and a professionally published book that will allow students to go public with their learning.

Invest in teacher professional development
Fund workshops that empower teachers as they learn to cultivate a culture of writing and develop turnkey projects that bring student voices to life. This investment ensures students have the opportunity to share their unique stories and perspectives in professionally published works, fostering confidence, creativity, and academic growth.

Enrich classroom libraries
Provide schools with powerful peer-written books from SPI authors, showcasing diverse voices and experiences. By making these works accessible to more students, you can ignite shared learning that motivates students to see themselves as contributors to their communities.

Mentorship and training

Professional experience
Grant a Teachers College student the opportunity to gain practical experience by collaborating with teachers and leaders at one or more of our partner schools, assisting in the delivery of professional development programs.

Make research a reality

Every project is guided by our principles of practice, creating a unique learning opportunity — for both the schools we partner with and our team — to transform innovative ideas into impactful research, driving real-world change in education.

Research as reflective practice
By engaging in reflective practice, we ensure that our work is informed by ongoing observation, collaboration, and analysis. This approach allows us to adapt and improve based on real-world experiences, ensuring our efforts remain relevant and impactful.

Bridging theory and practice
To deepen the impact of our work, we conduct program evaluations and develop academic research studies aligned with our school-based partnerships. Supporting formal research efforts not only enhances the reach of our work, but also demonstrates the value of connecting theory with practice in meaningful ways.

The Center for Professional Education of Teachers (CPET) at Teachers College, Columbia University is committed to making excellent and equitable education accessible worldwide. CPET unites theory and practice to promote transformational change. We design innovative projects, cultivate sustainable partnerships, and conduct research through direct and online services to youth and educators. Grounded in adult learning theories, our six core principles structure our customized approach and expand the capacities of educators around the world.
