Why Literacy Unbound?
What to expect
On Friday, July 29, the 2022 Literacy Unbound Summer Institute will culminate in an original, collaboratively generated film inspired by In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. The watch party for this film is your chance to see Literacy Unbound in action, and explore a story that blends historical fact and fiction, examining how resistance can become revolution, and the ways in which art and activism are entwined.

This year's company of players began crafting the film earlier in July, when our 8th annual institute commenced. Working entirely online and with the help of guest teaching artists, this year's cohort has stepped into In the Time of the Butterflies through improvisational movement, digital video, and sound. This screening will be the first time their collaborative piece goes live and will be followed by a talk back with the players. We hope you'll join us!

This event requires a reservation; however, there is no cost to attend.
Why Literacy Unbound?
The Literacy Unbound Institute is comprised of arts-integrated remix, transmedia storytelling, and literary studies — a terrific way for teachers and students to explore their creativity and curiosity while engaging in innovative, project-based pedagogical approaches to literature and history. The unconventional nature of the institute allows learners of all ages to gain firsthand experience with the our larger Literacy Unbound initiative while also exploring ways to transfer these practices to their own classrooms and communities.

Throughout the month of July, this year's players were invited to let their creativity shine — on their own as they read and respond to this year's text, and then in collaboration as they weave together their artistic talents to create an original, co-created film based on In the Time of the Butterflies. Alongside our talented facilitators and professional teaching artists, players discovered all the ways in which stories can be unpacked and reimagined.
