Redefine literacy
Remember when we thought literacy was simply the ability to read and write? This definition spanned many generations, and is still taught in some environments today. With the speed of technological advancements during the last two decades, and then the increased use of new technology for learning that most teachers were thrown into during 2020, we must expand our idea of what it means to be literate.
Empower students to evaluate information
Not only do our students need the ability to read and write, they also need the skills to determine fact from fiction and clickbait from trustworthy content. Literacy in the 21st century must include the development of cognitive and technical skills that will help students navigate massive amounts of information available at the touch of a screen and support them in evaluating, creating, and connecting with the world around them.
Embrace new approaches to reading
Across three self-paced modules, we'll unpack and re-evaluate definitions of literacy, identifying new instructional practices that will empower you to leverage reading in your lessons, units, and classrooms. Together, we'll explore approaches to 21st century literacy that can span content areas, ensuring that your students are able to make meaningful connections in their learning, and increase their comprehension skills.
