Watch imagination come to life
The 2023 Literacy Unbound Summer Institute will culminate in an original piece of performance art inspired by this year's selected text: The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson. This performance is your chance to see Literacy Unbound in action, and explore an American story of migration and the reverberations of collective movement to, within, and out of the United States through the lens of three individuals.
What will happen? Well, we don't know yet. This year's company of players will begin crafting the performance on July 10th, when our 9th annual institute commences. Over the course of nine days, they'll hone their voices as performances and collaborate to generate an immersive, site-specific performance.
Step inside the creative process
Working alongside professional teaching artists, this year's cohort has stepped into The Warmth of Other Suns through improvisational movement, digital video, and the remixing of a shared text. Following the performance, we will have a talk back where audience members can speak with the performers about the creative process. We hope you'll join us!

Why Literacy Unbound?
The Literacy Unbound Institute is comprised of arts-integrated remix, transmedia storytelling, and literary studies — a terrific way for teachers and students to explore their creativity and curiosity while engaging in innovative, project-based pedagogical approaches to literature and history.
The unconventional nature of the institute allows learners of all ages to gain firsthand experience with the our larger Literacy Unbound initiative while also exploring ways to transfer these practices to their own classrooms and communities.
Throughout the first weeks of July, this year's players were invited to let their creativity shine — on their own as they read and respond to this year's text, and then in collaboration as they wove together their artistic talents to create an original, co-created performance based on The Warmth of Other Suns. Alongside our talented facilitators and professional teaching artists, players discovered all the ways in which stories can be unpacked and reimagined.
