Manage expectationsThe NYS English Regents is a gatekeeping exam that all students in the state must pass in order to graduate from high school. This three-part exam requires students to read, comprehend, and analyze complex texts on demand and construct written responses on the spot. Its combination of high-stakes expectations, complex tasks, and challenging texts can create a daunting atmosphere for teachers and students, especially as graduation nears.

Read the RegentsAfter familiarizing yourself with the features of the NYS English Regents and the invisible skills that students need to succeed on the exam, you'll have a blueprint to use as you design curriculum aligned to the test's expectations and support students to pass the exam in June.

Design targeted instructionThis course will support you in diving deep into student performance data to identify areas with the greatest potential for improvement. Together, we'll investigate targeted strategies to address specific needs, equipping students at all performance levels with the skills and confidence they need to excel.

Schedule and Topics
This course is open for participation from February 24 to May 5, 2025, with new topics opening at regular intervals. While you can move through the course at your own pace, we find that 2 hours per topic works best for most participants.

Topic 1
Introduction to the English Regents
Explore the structure of the exam and the many challenges it presents to students across New York State. |
Topics 2-4
Reading the Regents
Investigate the required knowledge, skills, and other factors that have an impact on student performance within each part of the exam. Identify areas of the exam where student are likely to struggle, along with high-leverage areas that can increase student performance. |
Topics 5-7
Digging Into Data
Use exam rubrics as an instructional roadmap, explore what really determines a student's score on the exam, and analyze scoring guides to identify key trends in student work. |
Topics 8-10
Targeted Instruction
Match necessary exam skills with learning activities you can replicate for your students, find ways to motivate students who are struggling and discouraged, and explore strategies for increasing students' confidence in and understanding of the test. |
Topics 11-12
Classroom Instruction
Identify differentiated instructional strategies that will meet students where they are and help move them to the next level. Explore best practices for formative assessments and checks for understanding as the exam nears. |
Course ends
Course participation ends and assignments close on April 21. During the two weeks after this date, final grades and certificates will be processed.

Dr. Roberta Lenger KangDr. Kang started her coaching career in 2006, after nearly a decade of teaching in Denver, CO and NYC schools.
