Practical moves for new teachers
This three-part series aims to support early-career teachers who are facing a myriad of daunting challenges during their first few years in the classroom. Even after years of teacher education, many teachers find themselves unprepared for the rigors of the job. While university-based coursework, student teaching, and even edTPA certainly help pre-service teachers establish a foundation of sound practical and philosophical practice, there simply is no substitute for the on-the-job learning that occurs once teachers take the helm of their own classrooms. Over three sessions, A Teacher's Toolkit will provide newly in-service teachers with frameworks and venues designed to support their professional, intellectual, and psychic growth.
Throughout the series, you'll be able to:
- Develop a deeper understanding of student off-task behaviors, the non-confrontational interventions that can be used to address them, and the classroom routines and rituals that can help prevent them
- Reflect on and improve your practice of short- and long-term planning by applying the backwards-planning model of Understanding by Design to units and lessons you will soon teach
- Investigate the nature and purpose of formative and summative assessments and experiment with some promising practices that will culminate in the design of a complex, authentic summative assessment task
- Participate in and adapt for your classroom a series of pre-, during-, and post- reading structures designed to help students engage in academic conversations
- Construct an understanding of the Danielson framework for teaching, recognizing not only its potential as a tool for reflecting on and improving your teaching practice but also its role in your formal assessments
Is this series right for you?
