PRACTICAL PROTOCOLS & PROMISING PRACTICES
Teaching is a complex and difficult profession, requiring educators to play multiple roles while establishing a foundation of practical and philosophical practices. Even after years of teacher education, many find themselves unprepared for the rigors of the job. It shouldn't surprise us, then, that one in four teachers leaves the classroom within the first five years of their career. This course will support you as you establish yourself in the demanding (and rewarding) profession of teaching. Together, we'll explore strategies for aligning your instructional practices to the Danielson Framework, discover research-based teaching tools, and provide space for you to surface your needs as an educator. COURSE OBJECTIVES
IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU? A Teacher's Toolkit welcomes all K-12 educators, but is best for early-career teachers who want to:

LEADERSHIP THROUGH REFLECTION
Critical reflection is a catalyst that sparks the transition between novice teacher and teacher mentor. Through dialogue and reflection on critical incidents, teachers are able to identify crucial moments and formative experiences that have helped shape their identity as educators. These acts of reflection support teachers in developing their stance and rationale for their pedagogy, and the means to articulate it to others. This course will support emerging teacher leaders as they deepen their understanding of moments that shaped their teaching identity, and utilize the writing process as a vehicle for growing into the role of mentor teacher. COURSE OBJECTIVES
IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU? Critical Incidents in the Classroom welcomes all K-12 educators, but is best for teachers and teacher leaders who want to:

BUILDING TRUST IN SCHOOLS
As Lennon Flowers and Reverend Jennifer Bailey explain, “Relationships move at the speed of trust.” Each school community is a relationship web, and trust is the foundation of healthy relationships. When trust increases, relationships strengthen, and all community members are significantly more likely to thrive. Yet many school leaders and educators express that a significant challenge they face at work is how to build trusting relationships — whether with students, colleagues, parents, or school leaders. What is trust, exactly? According to recent research, how do we build trust moment to moment? And what are concrete, research-based action steps you can take tomorrow to develop the kinds of relationships that support thriving, not just surviving? This course will offer you the opportunity to learn about the art and science of trust-building, as well as how to apply it to your life as an educator. Earlier this year, the New York State Education Department released both “Social Emotional Learning, a Guide to Systemic Whole School Implementation” and the “Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education Framework”. Adult SEL, including how to establish trust-building relationships at school, is an essential component of these initiatives. COURSE OBJECTIVES

STRATEGIES FOR SWD & ELLS
Teachers want to help all students feel both supported and challenged. But what happens when you're teaching individuals with different strengths, different learning styles, and different comfort levels with the English language? How can you successfully differentiate instruction for students who work in modalities not typically privileged in schools? In this course, we'll explore ways for you to integrate multiple modalities into your lessons and units, and will address the promises and challenges of teaching in heterogeneous environments by exploring the principles of differentiation. You'll leave equipped with strategies, practices, and support for implementing differentiated instruction in your classroom (virtual or otherwise). COURSE OBJECTIVES

MEETING & EXCEEDING DANIELSON 3B
Educators across the country know that discussion is an essential ingredient in increasing student engagement, as well as demonstrating capabilities for teacher evaluation frameworks. Whether meeting the expectations of Danielson 3b or Hallmark 4* of Advanced Literacies, you can begin, continue, and deepen your discussion practices in this course. The design of discussion experiences is a rich opportunity to leverage instructional strategies that ensure all student voices are heard, and create space for authentic, student-led discussions. *Hallmark 4 of Advanced Literacies instruction addresses Academic Language — the language used primarily in school, civic, and professional settings; the language of text, academic success, and of power and influence. It is distinct from everyday conversational language. Discussion provides space for students to acquire and practice academic language across content areas. COURSE OBJECTIVES

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING IN THE WRITING CLASSROOM
Engaging learners in writing is a challenge for teachers at every grade level. How can you motivate learners, increase engagement, and support students’ emotional needs? From the earliest grade levels to our high school learners, teachers need relevant, clear, and actionable plans to engage our students in writing that meets them where they are, advances their learning, and builds upon their foundational writing skills. Literacy strategies are a necessary start to meeting the needs of diverse learners. Recent changes in the NYS Instructional Leadership Framework set new standards and concepts for reaching a variety of students. In its first brief on Advanced Literacies for Academic Success, the New York State Department of Education notes that Advanced Literacies are "skills and competencies that enable communication in increasingly diverse ways and promote the understanding and use of text for a variety of purposes." Throughout this course, we'll use the NYS Instructional Leadership Framework to inform project planning and development, and support you in identifying methods for providing appropriate feedback to your students, incorporating reflective writing into your curriculum, and using portfolios as projects to enhance learner motivation in teaching writing. Together, we'll focus on the writing process, connecting practical strategies with promising practices. COURSE OBJECTIVES
