Overview
Acknowledge & affirm student identity
Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education was adapted by the New York State Education Department in 2018, as a part of their wide-ranging plan to meet students’ needs through the Every Student Succeeds Act. The approach includes a commitment to acknowledge and affirm that students’ culture and identity are valid and valuable, and that educators who cultivate culturally relevant, responsive and sustaining spaces for learning will increase student academic, intellectual, social and emotional growth.
Unpack implicit biases
Our present is a result of a shared past, and our future is dependent on how we refine ourselves in the present. Developing shared historical knowledge and norming language towards inclusivity are foundational to becoming an antiracist culture. At CPET, we partner with teachers, schools, and districts in the deep, authentic journey toward equity, including supporting educators through a personal excavation of implicit biases. Before we worked with others, we started with ourselves, seeking common ground through common knowledge and shared goals, using seminal texts to inform our exploration.
Explore equity with the experts
One way to interrogate our own thinking and actions is to engage with a shared text. Using Ibram X. Kendi's How to Be an Antiracist, Zaretta Hammond's Culturally Responsive Teaching and The Brain, and Advancing Racial Literacies in Teacher Education from Detra Price-Dennis and Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz, we will focus on three concise workshops that are rooted in inquiry and will move you through investigation, interaction, interpretation, and inspiration.
This online experience is ideal for both the educator who is ready to delve into reading for a few weeks and for the educator who may not have the time or resources to read these texts cover to cover, but wants an experience that will deepen their own understanding of key concepts within culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogy.
