About this series
This experiential, hands-on writing workshop series, hosted in partnership with Eve Becker of Leaf and Pen, is designed to help both you and your students craft prose with voice, authenticity, and vitality. Over three sessions, you'll explore strategies for finding inspiration, locate meaningful fiction and nonfiction ideas, structure and develop a piece of writing, and establish best practices for engaging your students in the writing process.

Throughout this series, you'll be able to:
  • Identify ways in which you can help students brainstorm ideas for a wide variety of prose pieces
  • Harvest rich writing material through critical reading, guided visualization, and other activities
  • Structure and develop your own writing
  • Share writing and feedback for effective revision
  • Establish best practices for writing within school spaces

Meet your facilitator, Eve Becker

Eve Becker teaches middle school English at The School at Columbia University, and is the founder of Leaf and Pen, an organization that runs writing retreats and workshops for educators and students of all ages. She is currently pursuing an EdM at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Eve
came to teaching after a first career as a writer and editor in both print and digital publishing. She is the author of over thirty published novels for young readers, and numerous stories and essays for adults. In 2012, she was awarded a Pushcart Prize for her personal essay, "Final Concert." Her short fiction and literary nonfiction has appeared in The Gettysburg Review, Our Town, The Huffington Post, and other publications. Prior to becoming a teacher, Eve worked as a freelance writer and editor. She was also Editor in Chief of Her Online, the first commercial website for girls, and Editorial Director of zoggle.com, a teen website.

Her professional interests include building writer identity in both students and teachers, adolescent literacy, equity through literature, and teacher education. She graduated from Oberlin College in 1980 and is a native New Yorker, parent, traveler, and dreamer. She believes that through active learning that is both personal and shared, we become empathetic, responsible, and connected, that we find pleasure in intellectual challenge, and that we become vital members of our world.
